Good topics but crucial points are left to painful guesswork.
Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2018The topics chosen to be in the book are very good, but the explanations are lacking and ambiguous because the authors show an example without explaining the general principle behind it. This leads to many hours of frustrating searches on the internet trying to make sense of things you see in the book.
Two examples: they first show the use of fx:factory to create a list using a factory static method. The FXML element has three children. Because the FXMLLoader treats java Lists especially, it adds the children to the list by using its method add. However this is never explained, and it is confusing because the static method could have returned an object of a different type, for example, Set, and it is unclear what would happen then.
Or, when they explain that an included FXML file may specify a controller and that this controller will be injected as a field in the parent FXML controller class, they fail to say that this field has a very specific naming requirement: its name must be fx:id + "Controller", where fx:id must be the id of the included FXML element. The reader is left to guess that, if they want to use it in their own programs.
These are just two examples, and the book has many more. This makes reading it quite unpleasant. But, like I said, the coverage of topics is good.

Jake1 out of 5 starsOnly for the morbidly curious
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2015If ever you wanted to see what a book written by a dozen people looked like - well this is it. Completely different voices between chapters. Massive slabs of source code with no explanation or context. It's like they got random people from Oracle to do a brain dump, put all the bits together and slapped a cover on it. I returned it.
