Details— Types of Typesetting—Part I
Learn More
Hosted by Professor Fraser Muggeridge, this 3 hour symposium in 2 parts, addresses one of typography’s least examined yet most pervasive problems: what occurs at the end of the line. While line endings shape the visual, rhythmic, and ideological character of text, approaches and experimentation within alignment remain largely untheorised. Methods are commonly transmitted as tacit professional knowledge, passed between designers and typesetters with minimal critical articulation. Muggeridge will present his research into the historical, cultural, and technological conditions of justified and unjustified composition and everything in-between. His findings uncover alternative models for setting text, developed across the last century, that challenge dominant conventions.
Further presentations by Studio Studio (Iceland) and Dafi Kühne (Switzerland) will explore different approaches to typesetting involving language, The Flattersatz, Micro and Macro spacing and all things typographic. The symposium will conclude with a discussion between speakers and attendees, foregrounding contrasting positions on justification, alignment, and typographic ethics. This event is intended for designers, researchers, and students concerned with the critical, material, and cultural dimensions of typography.
