EA Gothenburg Working on Next Need for Speed

Criterion may not be the sole developer after all.

EA Gothenburg is currently hiring for a Need for Speed game. On the studio’s Work With Us page, Gothenburg asks “Would you like to be a part of EA? Would you like to work on a game in the Need for Speed franchise? You now have the opportunity to become a part of EA Gothenburg and fulfill those two wishes! We are hiring, and we are hiring a lot!” A listing for a senior vehicle artist from EA also says that Gothenburg is "focusing on making a new generation of games on the Frostbite 2 engine," suggesting that the game will run on the same engine as Need for Speed: The Run and could even be for next-gen consoles.The studio is currently hiring an art director, audio designer and engineers, creative director, vehicle artist and much more, suggesting that it will be contributing quite a bit to development rather than working in an assist capacity. Previously, Criterion -- the developer working on the upcoming Need for Speed Most Wanted -- was put in control of the Need for Speed and Burnout franchises. At the time, Criterion vice president Alex Ward said “Our stamp's going to be in everything you see in Need for Speed and Burnout going forward in the future. It's not going to be spread anymore across different companies. Different studios have had a crack at it - it's definitely a Criterion gig now."
Given Ward’s comments, it’s not clear if Criterion will be assisting Gothenburg or if plans have changed since that statement was made. Previously, Criterion created Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit in 2010, then handed the reins to EA Black Box, who built Need for Speed: The Run. Australian studio IronMonkey is currently working on a mobile version of Most Wanted.

EA hasn’t formally announced the next Need for Speed game, but we’ve reached out for clarification about who will be handling development. Need for Speed Most Wanted, meanwhile, will hit stores on October 30th. For more, read our interview with Criterion producer Leanne Loombe.
