numrep.doc
MS Word formatted version of Web page listed above; distributed in class as a handout.
12 pages, 151 Kb

Text Editors

"I was simply annoyed with the poor usability of Notepad and it was clear that Microsoft wasn't ever going to improve it"
-- Alexander Davidson, author of metapad
Most text editors fall into 1 of 2 categories: Windows Notepad replacements and full-featured programmer's text editors. I have included a very small selection of each; a search on The Internet using search keys of "Text Editor" or "Notepad + replacement " will leave you spoiled for choice.
I have intentionally not listed slow-loading, bloated editors written in Visual Basic that require additional DLL's.
For text editors that do not include a spell checker see FreeSpell under Utilities in the next section
Win32Pad (Freeware)
www.gena01.com/win32pad/
Excellent Notepad replacement: small and fast loading (approx. 30 Kb executable). Good selection of enhancements and useful features lacking in Notepad, but not burdened with lots of confusing options and features.
Stand alone program: does not need installation, additional DLL's, or Registry modifications.
Note: If you need or want more options and features, see metapad.
metapad (Freeware)
www.liquidninja.com/metapad/
Excellent Notepad replacement: more bells and whistles and larger executable (approx. 95 Kb) than Win32Pad.
Many very useful features usually only found in full-featured editors: 10 "Quick Buffers" with hot keys that act as macros; Upper-Lower case conversion; "Commit Word-Wrap" that adds carriage returns where you size the screen; DOS and UNIX file formats; and more.
Stand alone program: does not need installation or additional DLL's. Saves configuration and option settings in a single Registry path that can be exported and transferred to additional systems.
Programmer's File Editor (Freeware)
http://download.com.com/3000-2352-904159.html
Good, stable text editor; no longer supported or maintained.
From Download.com
Crimson Editor (Freeware)
www.crimsoneditor.com/
Requires installation. Syntax highlighting and many powerful features useful for programming. Spell checker, run external programs, keystroke recording (macros).
Note: I do not have personal experience with this editor; however it seems to have most, if not all, of the functionality of TextPad which I personally use)
TextPad (Shareware)
www.textpad.com/
Requires installation. Color Syntax highlighting with good selection of downloadable language syntax definition files. Supports running external programs (such as compilers and assemblers) while in editor and importing error messages. Spell checker, macros.
SciTE (Open Source)
www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html
Excellent GUI programmer's text editor for MS Windows and the X Window system on Linux with the GTK+ library. Syntax highlighting for 40+ languages; runs. compiles, or builds source files with a split output window.
Vim ("Charityware" - GPL )
www.vim.org/
Vim (vi Improved) is an improved version of the vi editor included in virtually all UNIX systems. On many UNIX and Linux systems the vi command is actually a link to vim.
Numerous operating systems supported including Windows, "pure DOS", and Macintosh.
Windows GUI, Windows 32-bit Console, 16-bit & 32-bit DOS versions.
If you are not already familiar with vi on *nix operating systems this is probably not what you are looking for...

Supports many archive formats, including RAR and higher compression ratios for ZIP format archives.
less
www.greenwoodsoftware.com/less/
MS-DOS and Windows ports of the popular GNU paging utility found on many UNIX systems and included in virtually all Linux distributions. less is a "backward more." less is more than more because, among other things, you can scroll forward and backward and search (using regular expressions) for text strings. less is excellent for viewing Unix-style man pages on Windows systems.
MS-DOS binary (works on Windows and faster than Windows version; generally preferable): less381d.zip
Windows binary: less381w.zip

Programming Languages: Articles & Opinions

"Programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines to execute. "

The New Methodology
Martin Fowler
www.martinfowler.com/articles/newMethodology.html

"In the past few years there's been a rapidly growing interest in agile (aka "lightweight") methodologies. Alternatively characterized as an antidote to bureaucracy or a license to hack they've stirred up interest all over the software landscape."

The Law of Leaky Abstractions
Joel Spolsky
www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/LeakyAbstractions.html

"The law of leaky abstractions means that whenever somebody comes up with a wizzy new code-generation tool that is supposed to make us all ever-so-efficient, you hear a lot of people saying 'learn how to do it manually first, then use the wizzy tool to save time.'"
"...abstractions save us time working, but they don't save us time learning."
