The Great Tikzlings Christmas Extravaganza 2025

The Great Tikzlings Christmas Extravaganza 2025 has just been released.
Guided by William Shakespeare and Dante Alighieri you are going to
meet a hallucinating meerkat and Wagnerian bats. You will learn things
about Canada and find out where all the flowers have gone. You will
listen to "Silent Night" on steel drums and see your favourite
Tikzlings on holiday in France. There are ducks on ice, termite soup
and reminiscences of Alfred Hitchcock, and some of the participants
are hopping mad and, and, and ... Have a look!

TUG 2022 proposal deadline June 15

The deadline to receive presentation proposals for the
TUG'22 conference
is June 15, about a week from now. The
conference will be held online July 22-24.

It would be great to receive more proposals, so if there's anything TeX-
or typography-related you'd like to give a talk on, don't hesitate to
send in a title and abstract. Presentations are usually around 30min, but
shorter or longer is fine.

We also greatly appreciate accompanying papers for the TUGboat
proceedings (deadline: July 31), but this is not a requirement.

Registration for the conference is free.

Thanks for considering, and hope to see you there. --happy TeXing, karl.

P.S. Please feel free to redistribute this note elsewhere. The more
widely it goes out, the better.

The log4j vulnerability and TeX

Regarding the recently-discovered log4j vulnerability, the only program to our knowledge in
TeX Live which uses the Log4j class is the arara utility;
further, arara is not directly impacted by this issue, as explained in this
Arch
Linux issue. Nevertheless, arara has been updated in TL (and
on CTAN, and upstream), and is available through normal
update mechanisms. No program in TeX calls arara
internally. The TeX engines (TeX, pdfTeX, XeTeX,
LuaTeX, etc.), are completely unaffected. LaTeX and other TeX formats
are also completely unaffected.

Glisterings: The Book

TUG has published a third book,
    Glisterings:
LaTeX and Other Oddments, by Peter Wilson, a collection of 27
columns on LaTeX and other topics written for
    TUGboat ,
It is softcover, 130 pages, 8.5x11, ISBN 098246262X, available from
TUG for $20 including shipping or from
Amazon (more links on the book's page). The original
columns as published in TUGboat are available to all in the journal
archives. For this book, they were corrected and augmented where
needed. The author also wrote a brief introduction, and prepared an
extensive index and bibliography. This book joins the two others
published by TUG some years ago,
    TeX
People: Interviews from the world of TeX, and
    TeX's
      2^5 Anniversary: A Commemorative Collection.
Although the book is not specifically related to the
    TUG'20
conference going on as we write this, it seemed a good

New Lucida DK fonts and other updates

New monospaced Lucida variants are now available from TUG,
dubbed "DK" for Don Knuth, who inspired the new designs.
They are available on their own to TUG members, or as part of the
entire TUG Lucida font set to anyone. The other Lucida OpenType
fonts distributed by TUG have also had some small updates, available
at no charge to past customers. Finally, TUG now offers the OpenType
and Type 1 Lucida fonts together, for both individual and site
licensees, at only a nominal extra cost compared to the previous
price of either format on its own.

TUG 2016 conference and excursions: expressions of interest
    requested

The
    TUG'16
conference will take place in Toronto,
Canada, from July 25-27, 2016. We are planning several optional
tours so that visitors can partake of some of the sights that the
region has to offer without having to organize travel themselves.
We need to get a sense as soon as possible of how many people are
interested in these excursions, so please see the
    excursion
details and submit information there about any in which you
   (probably) wish to participate.
   We have also posted the
    call
     for presentation proposals and
    bursary
     application (for financial assistance), and
    hotel
reservations at a group rate can be made any time.
(The registration form will be available in due course.) Thanks,
and hope to see you there!
