Google is donating $2million to the Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, according to a tweet by its founder Jimmy Wales.

Some bloggers are asking what sinister motive lies beneath the surface, especially as Google's own similar service called Knol failed to gather momentum last year.

But the donation will help Wikipedia to keep up with new technological demands.
