  • A few weeks ago, we launched the #BuiltWithImageEditor Challenge. The idea was simple: give builders the React Image Editor, a GTA VI-inspired theme, and the freedom to see how far they could push it. We weren’t looking for a specific type of project. We wanted to see developers experiment with the editor, make it part of the experience, and build things we probably wouldn’t have thought of ourselves. The response exceeded our expectations. We received 80+ submissions from 70+ builders, covering everything from open-world games and graffiti experiences to mission planning tools and interactive heists. Choosing just three winners wasn’t easy, but after reviewing all the eligible submissions, the team reached a decision. 🏆 Winner #1 — Neon Walls: https://lnkd.in/eiT5wu9w An open-world graffiti game where the React Image Editor becomes the spray can itself. Players create graffiti in the editor and see their work appear directly on walls across the 3D city, with editor functionality woven into the core gameplay. 🏆 Winner #2 — Heistboard: https://lnkd.in/edbY8xkW A GTA VI-inspired mission planning tool where users choose a real location, create their identity, and turn the map into a heist plan using routes, markers, text, stickers, and custom visual layers before exporting the final dossier. 🏆 Winner #3 — Sundown Customs: https://lnkd.in/efBsWgbD An open-world heist experience built around seven customised Image Editor sessions. Players design their getaway car, create crew branding, plan routes, manipulate their wanted level, and even hijack a live news broadcast, with each edit directly affecting what happens next. Congratulations to all three winners, and a huge thank you to every builder who participated, experimented with the Image Editor, shared feedback, or simply gave the project a try. One of the biggest takeaways from the challenge was seeing builders treat the Image Editor as much more than an editing panel. In many of the submissions, it became part of the game mechanics, the interaction model, and the experience itself. That’s exactly the kind of experimentation we hoped open sourcing the React Image Editor would unlock. This is just the start. More open-source initiatives are on the way. Stay tuned…

Excited to share my latest project: The Vice Syndicate — A GTA VI Heist Planning & Tactical Command Center, built for the Unlayer React Image Editor Challenge! 🌴🎮 🎯 The Concept An in-universe interactive web application where players plan high-stakes heists across Vice City: • Scout 3 target locations (Bank, Casino, Luxury Villa) • Select tactical approaches (Subtle vs. Loud) • Assemble a crew of specialists whose traits alter game mechanics • Plot infiltration routes on architectural blueprints • Watch the getaway unfold through an animated Sky-Weazel 4 CCTV Police Pursuit with procedural sirens and drifting physics 🛠️ How Unlayer (YC W22) Powers It We embedded Unlayer's React Image Editor across multiple touchpoints: Blueprint Trajectory Routing: The user's brushstrokes are analyzed via pixel diffing and Breadth-First Search (BFS) to validate paths and raycast against security camera cones. Surveillance Recon: Cropping and annotating facility photos with tactical notes. Crew Disguises: Customizing operative mugshots with tactical gear. 1920×1080 Mission Briefings: Adding classified watermarks and stamps before export. Why did I build Vice Social? The challenge from Unlayer was simple: build something you would genuinely want to experience in GTA VI, and make React Image Editor a core part of it. So I started thinking about the world of GTA itself. A lot of the experience is not just missions, driving, or combat. It is the feeling that the city is alive. That made me wonder: What if GTA VI had its own in-game social network? That idea became Vice Social. Vice Social is a fan-made social experience inspired by Vice City, where players can share moments, build their reputation, follow other characters, receive reactions, and see the city respond to what they post. But I did not want the image editor to feel like something added just to satisfy the challenge. I wanted it to belong inside the experience. So the React Image Editor became the creation studio. A player can upload a photo, crop it, apply filters, add text, draw on it, use stickers or frames, and then publish that edited image directly into the in-game feed. The flow is basically: Capture a moment → edit it → add a caption → publish it → watch the city react I also added a small simulation around it. NPCs can react to your posts, leave comments, follow you, create their own moments, and trigger notifications. There is also a REP system, profiles, crews, districts, and a persistent feed. The goal was to make the image editor feel like part of a fictional game mechanic rather than just another editing tool on a page. It was a fun challenge because it pushed me to think beyond “how do I integrate this library?” and instead ask: “How can this library become part of the world itself?” That is what I tried to build with Vice Social. #BuiltWithImageEditor

Small side project for the Build with React Image Editor challenge. BOLO is a fictional police terminal. You pull a suspect's record, drop the intake photo into a full-panel image editor, grade the scan, stamp the plate, push the bulletin to the field. Close three cases and something changes: a new record enters the queue, carrying your own operator ID. Same editor. Now you're the one being edited. Built with React 19, Vite, and @unlayer/react-image-editor. No image analysis anywhere, the verdict is scored from the same plain object the editor already built. Demo below. • Lots of builders have been asking us if they need to develop an actual in-game experience. The answer is no. Here’s the gist: present the experience in the format you’re most comfortable with and that best suits your idea (image, video, GIF, landing page, etc.). Good luck 🫵🏻 #BuiltWithImageEditor
