This page keeps a readable account of those gatherings for designers and front-end developers. It is an archive, not a listing of upcoming events. For the purpose of the forum, see About D2.

Highlights from the Seventh D2 Front-End Technology Forum

The seventh D2 Front-End Technology Forum closed on 7 July 2012 after a two-day program. The organizers at Alibaba, and the people who supported the event, made that closing possible. The forum invited readers to carry the same interest in front-end work into the eighth D2, planned for 2013.

Registration for this edition reached 1,377 people, and about 840 attended.

Most of the program used shared talks and expert discussion. Speakers raised front-end problems that were active that year, compared approaches, and worked through them with the room. In the morning, the main hall held a session on front-end performance monitoring and optimization. Tencent, Baidu, Sina Weibo, and Taobao each brought a concrete performance problem, then looked for shared ways to address it.

A session titled “Third-Party Content Development in Practice” gathered speakers from Baidu, Shanda, and Taobao. They described problems they had met while embedding or building on third-party content, and the solutions they used.

Another session, “Editor Design Ideas,” brought together the authors of three widely used editors: KindEditor, KISSY Editor, and UEditor. They explained how each editor was designed and compared the strengths of the three approaches.

Across the two days, other rooms covered Node.js, web apps, mobile web development, and JavaScript SDKs. The aim was to collect practical experience from working projects, not only slide summaries.

Keynote talks

The forum announced the following talks. Slide files are not hosted on this website.

  • “Exploring Front-End Technology for Reading-Style Web Applications,” by Shiyan (Douban).
  • “How to Find Front-End Performance Problems,” by Liu Jie (ow), Taobao.
  • “CPU Performance Optimization for Qzone,” by Guo Run, Tencent.
  • “JS Berserk,” by Qian Baokun, Weibo.
  • “Baidu’s Practice in Front-End Performance Monitoring and Optimization,” by Cheng Liyin, Baidu.

Registration announcement for the seventh forum

The note below is the registration appeal published after the sixth D2 forum, kept here as part of the record.

Front-end work had already passed through years of experiment, uneven tooling, and rapid growth. The sixth D2 Front-End Technology Forum was treated as one sign of that change. Registration for the seventh forum invited people who cared about the same problems to go further together. The announcement closed with the line D2.Run();

D2 and Taobao technology salons in Beijing and Hangzhou

On 24 March 2012 the D2 technology salon, co-organized with Taobao, met in Hangzhou and Beijing. Both meetings ran from 13:30 to 18:00. Registration at the time was handled at developerclub.taobao.com. These were smaller gatherings than the July forum, built around the idea that friends could meet and talk through front-end work.

Hangzhou used the theme “Talking about experience around the front end.” The listing covered front-end testing, file organization, and iOS-style gestures and animation on the web. Beijing used the theme “Front-end technology and online travel.” The listing covered modular front-end development, Taobao Travel’s major promotions, and performance work at Qunar.

Speaker notes and discussion topics from both afternoons are on the 2012 salons page. That page is a record of the program, not a signup for a current event.
