Operating a Cache You Cannot Live Without: Diagnostics and Manual Control for the Managed Cache Layer
There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation and naming things.
Phil Karlton
The line gets quoted to death because it keeps being true.
In the previous post I described a transparent managed caching layer for Sitecore XM/XP that wraps any serializable result set with almost zero ceremony. Template-based auto-flushing, custom delegates, cross-instance propagation via the event queue. We ended up leaning on it for nearly every expensive recurring computation in the solution: Solr result sets, generated links, filtered and sorted lists, custom item resolvers, multi-source aggregations. Once a cache layer is load-bearing across that much of an app, Karlton’s first hard problem stops being theoretical.
