BP PLC’s Gulf of Mexico spill two years ago washed up in Canada in a big way — the British oil major was forced to shed Canadian assets worth nearly $6-billion to pay for the cleanup, leaving it with no Canadian production.
It was a big comedown for the company, which used to be Canada’s largest natural gas producer and whose storied predecessors include Amoco Canada, Dome Petroleum, Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas and Crestar Energy.
But Christina Verchere, the unit’s newly appointed president and chief executive, said BP is back in growth mode here and sees the oil sands as an attractive building block.
